Webbies Review
Review Score:

Webbies, a slingshot puzzler from Nano Titans, is now available from the app store. With cute characters, simple controls, and a variety of ways to rack up points and earn stars, Webbies is a family-friendly offering that does what it does very well.

Webbies Pros:

  • Cute characters and colorful environments with clever level designs
  • Soundtrack meshes well with gameplay
  • Simple slingshot controls are responsive and familiar
  • Variety of obstacles and helpful items, point bonuses for combining, banking, etc.
  • GameCenter integration provides global leaderboards

Webbies Cons:

  • Ultra-cute presentation may turn off older gamers
  • No achievements

Webbies contains 100 puzzles spread evenly over 5 level packs. Each level presents a spider web with food items stuck to the webbing. Each food item is specific to an animal type that is present somewhere on-screen. Using slingshot mechanics, you must fling each food item into the waiting mandibles of the corresponding animal. Combining similar items, banking food off of walls, and other maneuvers will earn additional points which will allow you to earn the full 3 stars per level. Several obstacles are included to make your task more difficult, like non-food objects contained within the webbing that force you to find alternate routes or moving barriers that require you to work within a specific time frame or risk missing your opportunity to feed some of the animals entirely. There are also helpful elements like the sucker that pulls in and holds items passing by, allowing you to redirect their paths. Some animals are in locked cages, requiring you to fling the matching key at the cage before they can accept their meals. Occasional bonus levels offer you chances to earn extended aiming lines by firing food into the mouth of a moving animal while a countdown timer ticks away. These bonuses are consumable, but can be quite useful when seeking greater accuracy for banking shots.

Graphically, Webbies exudes a cheery cuteness that should appeal to young gamers. The animations are smooth and aiming the food items is very easy. The presentation is colorful and polished, and the level-ending fireworks display and dancing animals always elicit a smile. Additionally, the food items and animals are clearly distinguishable from one another. A helpful reminder in the form of a tiny food icon appears near each animal, lest you forget the pairings. The scoring gauge also adds a touch of tension as you wait to see how many points you earned and whether or not you surpassed the necessary star thresholds. There is no timer, so you can feel free to take your time and plan your attack to maximize bonuses. The soundtrack is sugary sweet, meshing well with the graphics and style. The controls are responsive and familiar, requiring drag mechanics that anyone can handle.

Replay value is decent, and figuring out how to snag the third star in many levels will take a little extra effort. GameCenter integration allows for global leaderboards to compare scores against other players, which also adds a bit of replayability. There are no achievements, however. A universal app for $0.99, Webbies is a great 4.5-Dimple app.
