Score! Classic Goals presents players with 80 scoring highlights from the 1980s to the present. Each goal is significant in some way that is explained upon completion, while a number of other stats are presented from the start. The challenge is to recreate each play faithfully based upon the diagram shown at the beginning of the level. You use simple line-drawing mechanics to pass or shoot the ball, with a good number of levels requiring multiple touches before putting the ball in the back of the net. The opening pass puts players into motion until the next player to touch the ball is just about to pass/shoot. At this point, time freezes and the next player to receive the ball is highlighted. In some cases, the pass is meant to lead the player, requiring you to swipe from the ball to the end of a yellow dotted line that indicates where the next player should accept the pass. Play continues as such until the final player touches the ball, requiring you to swipe to the appropriate location within the goal. Miss the mark and the goalie will deny your shot. Similarly, missing your teammates will also cause the ball to be denied by the opposition or roll harmlessly away. You are judged by the accuracy of your reproduction, with indicators like OK, Good, or Excellent appearing at each stoppage point. Upon scoring, you earn between one and three stars for your effort, as well as an Ace indicator if you scored on your first attempt. The AI is quite impressive, as they realistically react to your input. Plenty of balls banked in off of the crossbar or off the goalie, too, completing the level even if not in the intended manner.
Graphically, Score! Classic Goals is on par with the First Touch Soccer series, as you’d probably expect. Player movements and speed are natural, and the whole experience feels like it could have been an awesome additional mode in the regular game. There are Amateur, Professional, and Bonus modes, with each adding different restrictions to the core experience. While power isn’t taken into account in Amateur mode, Professional mode uses line-drawing speed to impact the power of the pass/shot. A red line indicates that you are drawing too fast, while a blue line indicates slowness. Keep it in the white and you’ll do fine. The soundtrack is upbeat and catchy, with an enjoyable looping tune. Occasional commentary and crowd noises help to flesh out the action and provide a full experience. The controls are strictly line-drawing, and the freeform nature allows you to curve shots. Very slight variations and minor quivers can spell the difference between snagging all stars or coming up short. A button at the screen top toggles between diagram and player actions to jog your memory if you forget where to put the ball.
Replay value is very good, as you have to be pretty spot-on to earn all of the stars. Each level should only take a few seconds to complete, so moving swiftly through the game is a breeze. Mastering it with all stars, however, will take quite a bit longer. GameCenter integration also allows for nearly 2 dozen achievements to earn. A universal app for $0.99, Score! Classic Goals is a fantastic 4.5-Dimple effort.
