As the comic-style storyboards indicate, King Bat realizes that he’s not exactly a looker and decides that the best way to remedy this superficial shortcoming is to seize all baby parrots and steal their feathers. Rupert, our parrot protagonist, feels compelled to save the birds, who are locked in individual cages in close proximity to a short length of rope and a number of wooden wheels and other dangerous items. The goal of each of the 60 levels is for Rupert to drag the rope (or ropes in some cases) to the bird cage, keeping contact with any and all wheels in the level to free the innocent young ‘uns. The faster you work and the less rope you use, the more points you earn. You can also earn up to 3 colored feathers for finding the most efficient solutions. A color-coded indicator in the upper right corner diminishes as you use more rope, giving you a visual indicator of how much rope remains and how many feathers you stand to earn.
There are a number of obstacles to overcome, such as knives that will cut your rope, fire that will burn it, bats that prevent you from completing your task, moving wheels that require timing to contact when in the optimal position, multiple ropes to grab at once, and much more. You’ll also come across several butterflies trapped in amber. They are freed when your rope comes into contact with them. These butterflies can be used to unlock levels or gain hints to puzzle solutions. You can later visit the bird sanctuary to view all of your freed parrots and butterflies if you are interested. The mechanics are fun and improving upon your solutions to earn the elusive third feather is a nice challenge.
Graphically, the levels encompass a variety of colorful and detailed environments, including Mist Island, Black Mire, Underground Hideout, Deception Meadow, and Castle Mountain. Animations are pretty smooth and the rope stretches and winds realistically around objects. The soundtrack is calm and soothing, and ambient noises such as bird chirps add a little flavor to the experience. Controls are drag-based, requiring you simple to drag Rupert to the rope and then direct him through the obstacles to the hook that propels from the cage once the last wheel is contacted by the rope. If you need a closer look at anything, there is a tiny zoom button in the bottom right corner. Panning is not necessary, as all levels fit with the confines of the screen. Our only real complaint is that our fingers tend to obscure our view and we occasionally had to redrag over a certain area as Rupert might not properly catch the rope to start or he might stop short of the hook when attempting to connect to the cage. Fortunately, releasing your finger simple leaves Rupert hovering where you left him and doesn’t send the rope winding back upon its spool.
Replay value is good, as you’ll likely need a few retries to hit upon the 3-feather solutions for all levels. Once you have, though, there isn’t a lot to draw you back in, except to solve puzzles faster to raise your scores. Crystal integration provides leaderboards and achievements, which are easily accessible from the level select screen. A universal app on launch sale for $0.99, Rope Rescue HD is an enjoyable 4.5-Dimple challenge.
