Review Score:

SwingWords from Vidiag is a new app that lets you display messages in a funky new way.  It may sound obvious from the app name, we like that here at AppSmile, but to display the messages just swing your iPhone from side to side. That’s it!

SwingWords Pros:

  • New idea
  • Lots of options
  • Easy to follow

SwingWords Cons:

  • Displaying messages can be tricky

Ok, well that’s not quite it. You can save a whole host of custom messages to display on your iPhone to make it easy to just pick the one you need from a list. Just tap the plus at the top right of the list and add your own.  You can pick the color of each letter too, so you can have a rainbow of colors with each letter different in a message or keep them all the same.

The interface of the app is straight forward. It won’t win any design awards, but this is functional and does exactly what it needs to.

The only tricky part is displaying your message. You have to swing your iPhone from side to side, making sure you keep swinging in a regular rhythm otherwise you’ll lose the message. You have to behave a little like a metronome, but once you get the hang of things it’s pretty simple to do. Just take a look at the YouTube demo below and this’ll show you how.

Vidiag didn’t just leave it at that either, there are a few options to choose from to make your message just that more special. You can Link Words whereby instead of seeing each different word on each swing, the whole phrase gets displayed in one swing.  Double Sided is where the messages displays when you swing both ways rather than just left to right and Mirror, well guess what that does?! You’ve got it! It displays the message back to front, so if you don’t have friends nearby, you can sit in front of a mirror sending messages to yourself!

There are a couple of other handy options too, such as being able to alter the font size manually, or leave it on auto.  Audio Feedback can be switched on and a little click sounds at the end of your message to try and help you keep time.  With links to the YouTube demo and the website built in, as well as the ability to email a link to friends or email the developer all from within the app, there isn’t really much they could have added.

The only downside found found to SwingWords is trying to keep a steady rhythm when trying to show your messages. This sometimes makes you miss the end of messages, and it can be tricky to keep your arms moving like a robot. Maybe plenty of practice in front of that mirror may come in handy!!
