Eggvolution Serves Up Scrambled Fingers
Review Score:

Eggvolution from Ongoz is a new iPhone app aimed at the Easter holidays. With fairly simple graphics and a simple UI, this game is easy to pick up and play at any time, day or night.

Eggvolution Pros:

  • Easy UI
  • Instant pick up and play
  • Quite challenging

Eggvolution Cons:

  • Poor music
  • No longevity

The object of the game is pretty straightforward. You have to collect as many eggs as you can as they drop from the weird looking creature above you. Collect enough eggs and the creature explodes, miss just three and you’re toast.  That sounds too simple, and you’d be right, but thankfully Ongoz has made it more difficult than that. Not only does the creature drop eggs with question marks on that can either make your basket bigger or smaller, but it also drops eggs with a skull that really knock your egg collection right back down. If you’re lucky though, there are golden eggs you can catch which give you and extra basket.  After each level of collecting eggs, you then have to dodge nasty black eggs that the same creature starts throwing down at you. Dodge enough and you get through, but as a reverse of the first part, if you catch three you’ve had it.

Eggvolution’s main creature starts off as a kind of amoeba chicken thing and through each level the chicken evolves (Eggvolution – get it?) until you end up with a fully-fledged space chicken with some strange looking things in between.  Each level starts with three baskets, so you have a fair chance of progressing, but with each level getting faster and faster, it does get harder to get through. Every egg gives you points, and missing one or two will knock points off, but keep your wits about you, and keep sliding that finger back and forth and you might just get through to the next level.

Ongoz has also made it interesting in that they’ve included an arcade one on one mode, but you can’t get to that until you’ve completed all 7 levels on easy mode. Here at AppSmile, we’ve got to admit that we’ve not managed to complete all the easy levels as yet, but we’re almost there. Don’t ask us about the hard levels, let’s just say it helps if you’ve got insanely quick fingers!

The overall interface of the game is really easy to get to grips with. Pretty obvious and simple to understand, which is useful as there is no tutorial. The graphics are fairly well polished, but look a little cluttered on some levels.  We’ve got to be honest here and say that we were really pleased there was the option to turn the soundtrack off. The sound effects are ok and what you’d eggspect (sorry) from an egg collecting app, but the soundtrack is not up our alley.

Overall Eggvolution from Ongoz offers quite a difficult challenge to start with, but there isn’t much to keep us coming back over and over again. This$0.99 egg cracks 3-Dimples!
