If you liked playing the original Mattel Football game devices when you were a kid, get this app. Made by TouchGrove, LED Football 2 nails the clicks, sounds, and graphics of the original. If you’re too young to know what the Mattel Football games were like, read further.

In LED Football 2 you play as the quarterback with a receiver in front of you. The computer plays defense and moves down towards your quarterback. You can either try and pass it to your receiver or, if you’re daring, try and run it yourself as the quarterback. LED Football 2 gains the option of moving backwards, giving you more flexibility in maneuvering around the defense.

Additionally, there is a local 2-person multiplayer aspect where you and a friend alternate between offense and defense. We found this was where LED Football 2 really came into its own, as it was far more entertaining to cheer and jeer against other player as you scored a touchdown.

Even if you weren’t around to play the original Mattel games, you may still like LED Football 2. I appreciate the lo-fi aesthetic of the game, which even replicates vintage stickers and instructions on the underside of the fictional game device. All in all, LED Football 2 is a game that was made with love and respect for a retro game, and we can certainly dig that.
