Alien Glyphs, a terrific new matching game from Viacheslav Klimov, has been climbing the puzzle game charts in the app store. With its attractive graphical style, simple gameplay, and exciting power-ups and power-downs, Alien Glyphs is poised to take its place as one of the app store’s newest puzzle phenoms.
Alien Glyphs offers three difficulty levels: easy, medium, and hard. Each level brings with it quicker gameplay and more intricate designs. The gameboard is a 6 x 6 grid containing unique symbols called glyphs. One by one, a glyph that matches one of the glyphs on the gameboard will slide across the top of the screen. You have a certain amount of time to match the glyph before another slides in. Simply find the matching gameboard glyph and tap it to clear it. There is no need to clear them in the order they appear, either. “Clearing” a glyph doesn’t remove it from the board, but rather dims it for a short period of time. Its matching glyph will not appear again in the glyph bar until the gameboard glyph is active again. Clearing glyphs quickly will result in fewer available active glyphs, which make it easier to find matching glyphs. If you allow the bar to fill completely with glyphs, you lose a life. Lose all of your lives and the game is over.
If that doesn’t sound difficult enough, there are positive and negative bonuses that will become available in the bar. You must find the matching glyphs for the positives before they expire. You must also find the matching glyphs for the negatives in order to neutralize them. These bonuses can affect how quickly the timer runs, can reorganize glyphs, can slow the speed of the incoming glyphs, etc. It adds a real challenge to the simple matching game. There are also bonuses to be earned for things like matching glyphs that are still sliding across the screen or clearing multiple glyphs within a very small time frame. As you get further in the game, the glyphs will slide in faster and there will be more possible parts in each glyph, making the patterns more difficult to distinguish from one another.
Graphically, the game packs plenty of stuff into the iPhone screen without feeling cluttered. The neon graphic scheme is appealing, though there are 3 other options available. Sounds are decent. They don’t annoy, but they don’t exactly get your blood pumping, either. You can play your own music if you like. Controls utilize tapping for all selections. There is a very detailed tutorial for you to play through (9 levels worth), helping you to learn the game and walking you through most aspects of gameplay.
Alien Glyphs sports OpenFeint to compare high scores and achievements with other players, adding to the replayability of the game. While there are many matching games in the app store, most are of the match-3 variety and don’t have the polish and excitement of Alien Glyphs. This game will not only give you a fun timewaster, but also help to sharpen your mind and reflexes. Currently, it is on sale, down to $0.99 for a limited time. Alien Glyphs is a solid 4-Dimple funfest that should impress puzzle fans of all ages.
