iPhone Game Reviews: Nanomechs is Flat in Addition to Being 2D

Nanomechs is described as a 2D first person shooter by the developer Theorian.  The new iPhone game harnesses the device’s wifi capability to produce a platformer-like shooter that can pit you against friends in an all out futuristic battle.  Although, the game has a great story line, it comes up shallow in the gameplay and user interface arena.

You play as a nanoscopic human with “bio-mechanical militaristic mobile suits”. In an effort to replenish Earth’s depleted resources, the human race resorts to a drastic measure -- shrinking their bodies to basically have a smaller ecological impact on the planet.  Now with more than 100 billion people on Earth, some have begun to rely on these bio-suits to defend themselves.

Nanomechs has two game modes. Single player seems rather pointless, with the goal to find and defeat other robotic humanoids in a battle against the clock.  Multiplayer is slightly more interesting as you can host or join a game over your local wifi network.  We did have some fun in an all-out survival battle with some friends.  Controls are simple: tilt to move left and right, tap on screen to fire, and tap the jump button to short-jump and double tap to boost/fly. We must say, it is challenging to locate you’re your enemies and upgradable weapons within the level and can deliver some edge-of-your-seat excitement momentarily.

While we were initially optimistic by the artwork and gameplay video, Nanomechs has turned out to be a little lackluster for our tastes.  If you’re looking for a platformer or a FPS, we suggest you continue your search in the App Store.

Nanomechs gets our AppSmile 3-Dimple rating:
