iPhone Game Review: DrawRace Laps Competition as Brilliant Race Game

002DrawRace, the brilliant new draw-and-drive racing game from RedLynx, was recently released in the app store. With its addictive gameplay and innovative control mechanism, DrawRace is an instant classic and one of the best deals available.

DrawRace puts you in control of the speed and path of a racecar as you compete in Time Trials, Race Against Personal Best, or Race Against Network Opponent. Time Trial is simply you racing against the clock. Race Against Personal Best places a ghost car on the track with you, racing the exact race that you previously ran to earn your best time. This allows you to evaluate where you have had success in the previous race and where you are able to improve in the current race in an effort to give you the necessary tools to improve your overall race time. Race Against Network Opponent pits you against another driver on the network in a head-to-head competition.

Twenty well-crafted tracks await you in this gem of a game. The coolest aspect is the way you race. Using your finger, you trace a path around the track for each lap of the race. The speed with which you draw is directly related to the speed with which your car will move. If your line wanders off of the track, you will slow down as you veer off of the raceway. The quickness that you draw your turns will determine whether your racecar drifts, brakes, or continues at a smooth, consistent speed in the race. It is an extremely enjoyable experience to watch your car react to the previous movements of your finger.

004Your times are tracked locally and can be uploaded to the server to compare nationally and globally against all other racers. It’s very satisfying to climb your way up the leaderboards and it creates massive replayability. There is even a hotseat mode where you can race against up to two other players on the same device for bragging rights.

007The graphics are terrific. DrawRace utilizes a top-down view of the track, while crowd noise, skids, and revving engines give an authentic race day feel to the game. The controls are fluid, intuitive, innovative, and perfectly suited to the game. Our only complaints with the game are minor. We’d like to be able to play the game in the opposite landscape orientation, with the home button on the right. It’s just our preferred method. The location services dialog box is also a bit annoying. We leave location services off on our iPod, as it’s fairly useless. Unfortunately, every time we access the server, we need to disallow the game from using our current location. There should be an option that allows us to avoid this altogether. Also, the start of each race is delayed by a few seconds while the text box that indicates that you are the red car displays. We know. We’ve been playing for hours. Stop telling us that. Otherwise, the game is outstanding!

We have yet to see anything quite like DrawRace in the app store. RedLynx has done a tremendous job with this unique game. We can see ourselves running our batteries down for days to come as we strive to be number one. At $0.99, this game belongs on everyone’s iDevice, without question. The 5-Dimple checkered flag goes to DrawRace!
