iPhone Game Review: Yetisports Pengu Throw

Do you remember the day you first received the email a link to Yetisports?  Think back now… OK, we’re talking about the hit-the-penguin Flash game that took the internet by storm back in 2004.  Yeah, you remember the entire office sneaking a play or two when the boss wasn’t watching.

Well, it wasn’t just the mischievous aspect that was so fun, the game was rather addicting.  And now Root9 MediaLab has brought it to the iPhone platform in all its glory in Yetisports Pengu Throw.

Just as in the original, the goal is to use a Yeti to launch a penguin through the air.  Travel the farthest you can to gain the most points.  Markers are posted along the way to tell you how you’re doing.  Pick up fish for additional points. This time Level play is an added mode to the original Classic version.  Meet the minimum distance and fish requirements to progress to the next stage. All 27 levels provide quite a challenge that will keep you flying for some time.

Root9 has cleverly incorporated the iPhone’s accelerometer to control the penguin.  However, we found it frustrating that you have to hold the device upright (like a steering wheel) to play.  An annoying pop-up message will remind you constantly if you don’t comply.  Tilt left and right to maneuver the penguin just right.  You’ll find that catching the air stream will take you the farthest.  Bouncing off seagulls also boosts your distance.  This little flightless bird has got to be loving it.

Root9 has Yetisports shining with handsomely rendered graphics and a frosty cool soundtrack (on the menu screens). Hopefully in-game music will be coming soon.  Our AppSmile team would also like to see some more variation in the environments too.  That stated, we must say that Root9 has the Yetisports heritage shining here -- this game is looking its best in years.
