Love Tetris, but Need to Chill? Drop Into BLiP Bloink

Today we’re reviewing a little diversion by BLiP Fun Games.

BLiP Bloink is a puzzle game that will instantly remind you of Tetris on a sedative. Much in line with other stacking puzzlers, BLiP Bloink’s goal is to eliminate pieces before they reach the top of the screen. Do this by matching characters with are previewed above the playing field. Not only do the pieces stack up if improperly matched, the ground ascends slowly pushing the characters to their demise. BLiP Fun Games has nicely incorporated eight lively figures that beg to be paired up and even react to the ascending playing field.

Three gameplay difficulty settings exist with the Medium and Difficult being unlocked as players progress. In each setting the playing field is displayed pre-stacked with a certain number of pieces. Current and high scores reside at the top of the screen along with level and pause displays. Directly under these is a character preview plane. Here players can move the character into the desired drop position. Do this by sliding a finger across any part of the playing field. Taping the desired location is also allowed. Once selected, the character will slowly float the position. When the character touches a matching piece, all connected pieces of the same type will be eliminated. If the drop path is obstructed by a non-matching piece, the character will stack on top. If the stacked characters reach the top of the playing field, the game ends. On the other hand if all pieces are successfully matched, the level is completed and the next begins.

We were disappointed that no soundtrack has been supplied by BLiP Fun Games. Thankfully they have allowed the iPod library to be enjoyed during game play. This interacts well with the sound effects that BLiP Fun does provide. On the whole, BLiP Bloink is likely best suited for kids wanting an easier experience than the traditional Tetris wannabes. The game is very forgiving as it almost always dispenses pieces that can be used.

It’s apparent that this is a debut game by the developer. But that being said, it is a clean package that delivers what it sets out to do. We’re thrilled to see so many non-violent games being released in the App Store these days. BLiP Bloink was highly enjoyable to play and offers a simple alternative to the geometric Tetris clones dominating the market.
