iPhone Game Reviews: Bobby Carrot 1 & 2 CLSX

Last month we reviewed Bobby Carrot Forever, the latest in the series of Carrot games from FDG Entertainment. Recently, FDG announced that they would be rereleasing the older Bobby Carrot games in succession up until June. Today we have our review of Bobby Carrot 1 and 2 CLSX (Classics). If you’re not familiar with the character, Bobby Carrot is an anxious little hair who is constantly off on an puzzle strategy adventure.

Originally released in 2004 the first Bobby Carrot title was preinstalled on a number of Samsung phone models. The sequel was released soon after under the title Bobby Carrot 2: Winterland. As the name implies, Bobby found himself in a wintery maze of 30 brain-freezing levels. Now both editions have been ported to the iPhone platform and delivers arguably the best game play experience Bobby has seen.

The mission of both games is to guide the riddling rabbit through multiple levels, all the while collecting carrots or placing eggs. Only when all carrots or eggs are complete can Bobby enter the magic exit to the next level. Yet, this is not simply a walk in the park. Traps permit Bobby to pass through areas but prevent return once activated. Additionally, direction-specific conveyor belts will allow travel to one section and not others. Strategically preplanning each move is essential. Thankfully, FDG has provided an overview button that facilitates study of the entire board before you even make your first move.
Bobby Carrot 2 CLSX takes Bobby Carrot 2: Winterland and adds 20 more Easter Egg Levels for the iPhoners enjoyment. In comparison to CLSX 1, the 2nd edition introduces more traps and objects into the mix. Like the conveyor belts from CLSX 1, ice takes Bobby from one area to another smoothly, this time in both directions. Ice-blocks prevent travel to obstructed areas. But Bobby now has Magic crystals at his disposal which melt the ice-blocks away with a laser beam. Want to melt ice in an area out of the direct beam path? Mirrors are now available which will reflect the light. Mirrors can be rotated by walking across them. On the journey to success, Bobby collects energy stars throughout the levels.

As expected from a mature series, Bobby Carrot 1 and 2 CLSX deliver bright an beautiful graphics which look like they’re straight off a Saturday morning cartoon. The soundtracks have been totally reworked and the sound effects appropriately match the cartoonish look and feel. Menus are coherent and allow simple in-game navigation. Controlling Bobby is a breeze via a couple available methods. Just swipe you finger in the direction of desired travel or move him with the available joy stick. As a throwback to its early roots, FDG has given Bobby Carrot 1 and 2 CLSX arcade themes through a virtual console surround. This however limits the game’s screen size. We prefer playing in full screen mode which is a convenient option.

So far, FDG has impressed the AppSmile team with three extraordinary Bobby Carrot titles for the iPhone. We’re looking forward to reviewing the upcoming installment which gets released next month. Stay tuned for our impressions of Bobby Carrot 3 CLSX.
