Upcoming iPhone Games: Toki Tori

Toki Tori has been hunting for his unborn family for almost 10 years now! Actually, more than that if you count his days as Eggbert. What’s been his major hold-up? You! That’s right, he needs you to help him -- and soon you’ll be able to do just that on your iPhone! You’ve probably at least heard of Toki Tori if you’re a Wii fan. The game just made its debut on Wii last year, but it’s been around a lot longer than that on the Game Boy Color platform. Now he’s coming to your iPhone and AppSmile.com has gotten preview of what he’ll be doing there.

Developer Two Tribes is porting this famous little chicken to the iPhone sometime this quarter of 2009. We’ve had a chance to play around with Toki Tori and think you’re gonna love him!

Toki Tori is a platformer style puzzle game. The goal is to find and collect all of his un-hatched siblings while working your way through each world. Sound easy? Once you get into it, you’ll find there actually is quite a bit of strategy involved. You see, Toki goes where you tell him, but he can’t overcome certain obstacles without the use of items. Items are obtained as you graduate to different levels. Some items can only be utilized at certain times, while others can only be used once. Use them wisely, or Toki Tori will get stuck and will have to restart the level. Levels get progressively more difficult and in some there is only one route to collecting all the eggs.

As in the Wii version, the game has four worlds with multiple levels in each: Forest Falls, Creepy Castle, Slimy Sewer, and Bubble Barrage. All worlds contain similar game play but have unique environments, enemies, and soundtracks.

We can tell this Two Tribes is very close to release because the graphics and music are incredibly refined. Toki Tori has highly rendered visuals that will convince you that this is no run-of-the-mill app. In fact, they will definitely challenge the Nintendo DS hands down. The menus are well designed and each level provides you with pointers on how to proceed successfully. You’ll even be presented with opportunities to learn how to use items.

We can’t wait for Two Tribes to release Toki Tori to the iTunes App Store soon. Until then, that little guy will have to wait for your help finding his family (unless you’ve got a Wii). Keep checking back at AppSmile.com as we’ll let you know when we find out more news. In the meantime, checkout our video preview of Toki Tori on the iPhone.
