Review: Nanosaur 2 for iPhone OS

This is a review for Nanosaur 2 by Pangea for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Nanosaur was a game originally released on the Mac/PC platform in 1998. Pangea
brought Nanosaur 2 to Macs and PCs in 2004.

Nanosaur 2 was released for the iPhone OS on October 14th, 2008 and the price
has been fluctuating anywhere from 7.99 to .99. Definitely worth the .99 cent
price and I think you would be satisfied up to the 2.99 mark.

In the game, you play as a Nanosaur -- essentially a time traveling pterodactyl-like
creature trying to collect your ancestor’s eggs from the past to repopulate
earths Dinosaur species in the year 4122.

While the storyline is a bit confusing and far-fetched, the game play is top
notch. The graphics and controls won’t let you down either.

When you start the app you are presented with a Pangea splash screen and then
the main menu. Your options at this point are New Game, Saved game, Settings,
and Info.

  • The Settings screen gives you all your expected options like accelerometer
    sensitivity and sound settings.
  • The Info screen presents you with information on credits, instructions,
which take you a website via safari (I don’t recommend choosing that), and
Quick Start which surprisingly is a built in instructions pop-up. I recommend
reading that in order to understand game play.
  • Saved Game loads a previously saved game; unfortunately your game can only
be saved upon completion of a level.
  • And New Game begins from level one.

When you select a saved game or new game Pangea has put together a pretty cool
load screen showing your Nanosaur traveling through time -- a nice touch.

So here we are on level one. And as you can see you control your flight through
the accelerometer. And the default setting seems to be just right. Actually
the response and turning radius of your Nanosaur is great because sometimes
you need to make a sharp turn in order to avoid an object. And there are lots
of objects to avoid, like Brachiosaurs, velociraptors, trees, mountains, and
weapons fire. Your weapons selection is located at the bottom of the screen
and touching it rotates through your arsenal. The red button fires whatever
weapon you have currently selected. To get more ammo pick up the green beacons
placed generously throughout each board. Blue beacons give you jet power, purple
boost your shield levels, red adds to your health status, and orange gives you
an extra life.

The goal on each level is to collect all the eggs in each area of the board.
You navigate using the map in the upper left corner of the screen. The egg locations
are not shown here but you have to fly around until you spot them on the ground.
To pick up an egg, just fly near it and it will automatically be grabbed. Then
fly to the nearest wormhole and the egg will be sucked up into it. Your collected
egg status is displayed at the top of the screen and eggs are organized vertically
be color according to their placement in each level. Once you find and collect
all the eggs you will be prompted to enter the wormhole to progress to the next
level.

Overall, this is a great game by Pangea. And it should provide a lot of game
play for you since the eggs are not that easy to find and your lives can run
out fast if you’re not careful. We wish the game had more than 3 levels
but at this price range, you should be happy with your purchase.
